Description
This magnificently detailed reproduction of an original Irish chair of around 1780 features a finely detailed and pierced interlaced back splat, straight legs, cross stretchers and a handsome (and comfortable) saddled-shaped seat. Irish Chippendale chairs, usually a little more exuberant than their English counterparts, were inspired by Thomas Chippendale's celebrated pattern book "The Gentleman and Cabinetmaker's Director" published in 1754. Rarely are the completed chairs exact copies of the illustrations in the Director, but it is easy to see the patterns from which they are derived. Over the years, cabinetmakers have most usually simplified the Chippendale chair, deleting much of the intricate detail, reducing the original handsome proportions and in the process losing much of the appeal of the original antique example. Classic Chairs still make the separate 'shoe' that joins the back to the seat and covers the upholstery nailing at the back of the seat. It is this attention to detail that sets Classic Chairs apart from other makers.
